DAM  INFORMATION

Flood management of the Vaal and Orange River system is the responsibility of the Directorate Hydrological Services in Head Office, Pretoria. Normal operation of individual dams is the responsibility of the Regional Offices.
Dam and river flow optimization
- this is a continuous process usually done twice a day during high flow conditions. The aim is to optimize the flow in the Vaal and Orange River system.

                                                              VAAL RIVER
Vaal Dam - capacity 2603 million cubic meters. The dam has 60 crest gates and a flood storage capacity of 25% above the 100% full supply level. Highest peak inflow of 4800cumec experienced during February 1996.  

                   
Bloemhof Dam - capacity 1264 million cubic meters. The dam has 20 crest gates and a flood storage capacity of 18% above the 100% full supply level. Highest peak inflow of 6200 cumec experienced during March 1988.

                            
 ORANGE RIVER
Gariep Dam - capacity 5341 million cubic meters. The largest dam on the Orange River and in the RSA.
Highest peak inflow of 11600 cumec experienced during February 1988.


Van der Kloof Dam
- capacity of 3171 million cubic meters. Highest peak inflow of 6700 cumec experienced during February 1988.
